Aldi Announces £1.6bn Expansion Plan

Aldi is to invest £1.6 billion in growing its UK business, with 80 new stores planned over the next two years in response to rising demand for low-cost groceries. The programme is expected to create thousands of jobs and more business for British suppliers.
Towns earmarked for new shops include Amersham, Watford, Willesden, Hanworth and Yate, and the company is also looking for sites in Ealing and Witney. Aldi has 1,060 stores at present and has a long-term target of 1,500.
The expansion follows record sales of £18.1 billion in the year to December 2024. With a 10.8 per cent share of the market, it now ranks as the UK's third-biggest grocer measured by food and drink sales.
Aldi UK and Ireland's chief executive, Giles Hurley, said shoppers were still under pressure and that the business would keep concentrating on good quality at low prices, stressing that it relies on everyday low pricing rather than loyalty clubs or promotions.
Alongside new openings, the investment will pay for improvements to existing shops and further development of its distribution network. Aldi says it has reduced prices on more than 900 lines this year and has been named the cheapest UK supermarket by Which? for four years running, even after loyalty scheme prices are taken into account.
The retailer spent £14 billion with UK suppliers in 2024 and says it is now the largest seller of British Wagyu steak in the country through its Specially Selected range.
