Council Acquires Old Store for New Use

UK Property Forums28 April 2025

Ipswich Borough Council has bought the former Grimwades store on the Cornhill, using money from the Towns Fund regeneration programme.

The building has stood empty since 2012 but has been an important part of the town centre since medieval times. It contains two units, one of which is already under offer, with the other expected to follow shortly.

The council is appointing a contractor to begin substantial repair and refurbishment work by the end of May so the building can be brought back into use, with new occupiers expected to move in later in the year.

Council leader Cllr Neil MacDonald said he was pleased the council had secured a building that had been blighting the town centre, adding that the acquisition shows the council's determination to create a vibrant centre for residents and businesses.
