Gatwick Announces Design Services Framework

London Gatwick has appointed 16 specialist design consultancies to a new framework supporting its capital investment programme, which is intended to improve capacity, resilience and the passenger experience as the airport grows.
The framework brings together firms of different sizes, including six SMEs, and allows design services to be commissioned more quickly on pre-agreed terms. It covers architectural, engineering, structural, baggage and fire engineering work. Projects in the pipeline include retail reconfigurations, taxiway rehabilitation, surface access and forecourt management, property upgrades and automated baggage handling.
The framework supports Gatwick's Decade of Change sustainability programme, including targets for at least 10% of total spend to go to local suppliers and at least 25% to regional suppliers. One appointed firm trades locally and eight trade regionally. Suppliers are also expected to promote lower-carbon design, with quarterly sustainability forums planned to encourage collaboration.
Contracts were awarded across five lots:
• Large Multi-Disciplinary: Arcadis, AtkinsRealis, Baker Hicks, Jacobs UK, Ramboll and WSP UK • Airfield: AtkinsRealis, Jacobs UK, Ramboll and WSP UK • Baggage: IDOM, Principal Projx (based in Horsham), TYPSA Limited and Vlogix Ltd • SME Multi-Disciplinary: Hulley & Kirkwood, Lyndon Goode Architects, Pascall + Watson, Pellings LLP, Pod Architects and Webb Yates • Fire Engineering: Jacobs UK and WSP UK
Alasdair Scobie, capital programmes director at London Gatwick, describes the framework as a key enabler of the investment plan and the first step in a wider construction supply chain strategy to bring on board skilled designers, consultants and contractors.
