Gatwick Decision Given Extension

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has indicated support for a second main runway at Gatwick Airport, issuing a "minded to approve" letter on 27 February 2025 for the Northern Runway Development Consent Order under the Planning Act 2008.
The examining authority's report was the first to recommend an alternative DCO, which adds a series of operational controls, some of which were not considered during the examination. To allow all parties to comment on these provisions, the deadline for a final decision has been pushed back nine months to 27 October 2025. The extension does not prejudge whether consent will ultimately be granted.
London Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate welcomed the announcement, saying it set out a clear route to full approval later in the year. He stressed the importance of planning conditions that allow the £2.2 billion private investment to proceed, which is expected to create 14,000 jobs and deliver £1 billion a year in economic benefits. He also said the airport was committed to growing responsibly while limiting noise and environmental impacts.
