Herts County Hall Up for Sale

Hertfordshire County Council has put its County Hall headquarters in Hertford up for sale, opening the way for residential, commercial or community uses.
The town centre site covers 25.58 acres and includes around 225,000 sq ft of office space. The sale comprises the original Grade II* listed main building, later extensions, the Grade II listed register office and a 1,000-space multi-storey car park. The council agreed earlier this year to market the property for alternative uses and has confirmed the council chamber will relocate to its Stevenage campus.
Savills and Walter Cooper Surveyors are handling the sale, with offers invited by 12pm on 4 December.
Molly Eyles, associate in the development team at Savills in Cambridge, explained that the original building was designed by Charles Holloway James and Stephen Rowland Pierce and built in 1939 by C Miskin & Son of St Albans, with extensions added in the 1970s. It has been promoted solely for employment use since September 2023, but limited interest has led to it being offered for other uses. Any change of use will need planning permission, and bidders will have to show how their proposals protect the building's heritage and meet the council's requirements.
The site sits close to Hertford town centre, with good links to Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, St Albans, Stevenage, Cheshunt and Bishop's Stortford. The neighbouring Leahoe House and Gardens, also owned by the council, will be redeveloped separately.
