London Cancer Hub Given Green Light for £1bn Expansion

UK Property Forums6 February 2026

Sutton Council has approved a £1 billion expansion of the London Cancer Hub, a major scheme to grow cancer research and treatment facilities in south London.

The project is being led by Aviva Capital Partners, which is financing it, working with development manager Socius. Savills submitted the planning application and guided the scheme through the planning process.

The consent covers around 1 million sq ft of laboratories, research facilities and amenities, together with affordable key worker housing. Samruti Patel, planning director at Savills, described the permission as a major milestone and said it followed extensive partnership working with the Institute of Cancer Research, the Royal Marsden Hospital, the local community, the London Borough of Sutton and the GLA.

She said the hub would strengthen the UK’s cancer research capability, speed up commercial innovation and attract global talent and investment. She also linked it to the government’s National Cancer Plan, published on World Cancer Day, and to the London Growth Plan, and highlighted the scheme’s architecture and landscaped public spaces.

The expansion is expected to create jobs during construction and once the facilities are running, with an influx of researchers and professionals likely to support local businesses. More widely, the scheme aims to improve patient outcomes through advanced research and to reinforce the UK’s standing as a leader in cancer research.
