Top Garden Design Trends for 2025
House Designer sets out the garden design trends it expects to shape outdoor spaces in 2025, with a common thread of combining style and sustainability.
Sustainable design remains a priority. This includes drought-tolerant plants such as succulents, lavender and ornamental grasses to save water, wildlife-friendly features like bird-friendly hedges, bee hotels and wildflower meadows, and furniture and planters made from recycled or reclaimed materials.
Outdoor living rooms are growing in popularity, with fully equipped outdoor kitchens, comfortable sofas, throws and rugs, and pergolas or gazebos that make gardens usable in unpredictable British weather.
Wellness is another theme, with gardens designed as places to relax and recharge. Ideas include quiet meditation corners, natural swimming pools that use plants instead of chemicals for filtration, and spa-style features such as outdoor showers and hot tubs.
Edible gardens continue to gain ground. Vertical planters help where space is tight, ornamental edibles such as rainbow chard, colourful lettuces and purple kale add visual interest, and herb gardens bring fragrance and flavour.
For busy households, low-maintenance designs are in demand, using realistic artificial grass, paving, decking and gravel, and automatic or smart irrigation systems.
Finally, bold colour and statement planting are in fashion, from colour blocking with plants or furniture to dramatic specimens such as giant alliums, banana plants and pampas grass, or simply brightly coloured pots.
The firm suggests homeowners adapt these ideas to their own style and lifestyle, so that the garden reflects who they are and makes the most of the space available.
