Wandsworth Receives £4.5m Decarbonisation Grant

Wandsworth Council has won £4.5m from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to improve the energy performance of five of its buildings, with a projected 92 per cent reduction in their energy use.
The buildings selected are Putney Leisure Centre, where this adds to work recently finished, Oakdene Residential Unit, Gwynneth Morgan Day Centre, Falcon Grove and Wandsworth Town Hall. Measures could include insulation, heat pumps, window and roof upgrades, and building management systems that use computer control to run lighting, security and other mechanical and electrical services more efficiently. The council is contributing a further £3.3m, and the work is expected to save around 570 tonnes of carbon.
Separately, two schools in the borough will receive upgrades funded by £200,000 from the Green Schools scheme recently launched by the Mayor of London, cutting each school's energy bill by roughly £15,000.
Paul White, cabinet member for environment, said attracting outside funding helped the council get good value while keeping council tax down, and that more efficient public buildings were an important step towards net zero.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero oversees the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, with Salix handling delivery. Its grants support a target of cutting emissions from public sector buildings by 75 per cent by 2037.
