Mosaic Converts Iconic Glasgow Building into Serviced Apartments with Space for Whisky-Themed Bar & Restaurant
Mosaic Architecture + Design has converted the former Teacher building on St Enoch Square, Glasgow, into serviced apartments, with space below for a whisky-themed bar and restaurant.
Global hospitality company Sonder has opened 25 short-stay serviced apartments on the upper floors. The ground and lower ground floors have full consent for a pub or restaurant with outside seating and have been left in shell condition for an incoming tenant to fit out. The permission allows for a Class 3 restaurant and bar with 101 covers plus bar capacity for a further 110.
The project, for JFM Electrical (Holdings), involved external repairs to the façade and new external lighting. The building's gilded 'Teacher' sign has been refurbished, and consent has been granted to reinstate the original 'Scotch Whisky Distillers' signage on the lower levels.
Designed by James Boucher, known for his involvement with Glasgow's Kibble Palace, the listed building dates from 1875 and was built as the headquarters, offices and dram shop of William Teacher & Sons, across the square from the former St Enoch station and hotel. More recently it served as a conference centre for the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
John Moore of JFM Electrical (Holdings) said it was rewarding to restore the historic building while giving it new uses. Stephen Mallon, director of Mosaic, said reinstating the signage had been a pleasure and that the consented bar and restaurant give the building a promising future.
